There are many variations of rummy including traditional rummy, gin rummy, rummy 500, kalooki, oklahoma, canasta, and several others.

Rummy 500 is also known as 500 Rum, Pinochle Rummy, and Michigan Rummy. Rummy 500 is played with a 52 card deck and 2 jokers. This game can be played with 2 players and up to 8 players. With 5 or more players, you use 2 decks, a total of 108 cards. Rummy 500 can be played with jokers as well. Each player is dealt 7 cards.
Gin Rummy is one of the most popular rummy games and is played with a standard 52 card deck. Gin Rummy is normally and best played with 2 players but can be played with up to 4 players. Each player is dealt 10 cards.
Kalooki is also known as kaluki or kalookie. Kalooki is played with 2 to 5 players using 2 decks of cards plus 2 jokers, 106 cards in total. Each player is dealt 13 cards.
Oklahoma is played with 2 to 4 players using a standard 52 card deck. With 2 players, each player is dealt 10 cards, when playing with 3 or 4 players, each player receives 7 cards. This game is very similar to the popular Gin Rummy game.
Traditional Rummy is the original, basic rummy game. This game is played with 2 to 6 players using a standard 52 card deck.
Canasta A card game that is similar to rummy, but more complex. Players attempt to make melds of 7 cards of the same rank, and go down by playing all cards in their hand and discarding. It is commonly played by two players with two standard decks of cards, but many variations exist for 3 and 4 player games or teams.
